Frequently Asked Questions
What grades does Out of the Box Academy offer?
We offer education from Preschool through to Grade 7, providing a continuous learning journey for children aged 3-13 years.
What initial payments are required upon enrolment?
- Registration fee: R450 (non-refundable)
- Deposit equivalent to one month’s fees (non-refundable, goes toward development fund)
- Learner development fee: R2,000 (non-refundable)
When are monthly fees due?
Fees must be paid on or before the 28th of every month. Payments made after the 3rd incur a late charge of R300 per day until full payment is received.
How much notice is required if my child leaves the school?
One full term’s written notice is required, or payment of three months’ fees in lieu of notice.
What are the school hours?
- School opens: 6:45am
- School day starts: 7:30am sharp
- Foundation Phase (Preschool – Grade 3) ends: 12:45pm (collection until 1:00pm)
- Intermediate Phase (Grade 4-7) ends: 1:00pm (collection 1:00pm – 1:30pm)
What happens if I’m late for collection?
Late collections incur a fee of R70 for every cumulative 10 minutes after 1:30pm, added to your monthly invoice.
Is aftercare available?
Yes! Aftercare/Homework Club runs Monday to Thursday at R1,100 per month per child. All homework, projects, and reading are completed at school.
How are birthdays celebrated?
Each child celebrates with a special birthday ring ceremony. Parents are invited to attend—please arrange with your child’s teacher in advance.
What curriculum does the school follow?
We follow the South African CAPS curriculum with our own enriched approach, emphasizing hands-on learning, problem-solving, and multi-sensory education.
How many children are in each class?
We maintain small class sizes with a maximum of 12 children per class to ensure individual attention and care.
How is teaching structured across grades?
- Foundation Phase (Grade 0-3): One teacher teaches all subjects
- Intermediate Phase (Grade 4-7): Subject-specific teachers
Does every child get individualized support?
Yes! Every child has an Individual Education Plan (IEP) that helps us understand where they are holistically and how to help them reach their potential.
What extramural activities are included?
All extramurals are included in fees and take place during school hours:
- Coding & Programming (All phases): Using state-of-the-art robots from the UK
- Termly Shows/Outings: Educational performances and excursions
- Teacher Jason’s Sports Club:Â Focus on a skills in a variety of ball sports, like soccer, rugby, tennis, rounders, cricket etc.
What materials are covered by the fees?
- All stationery, and workbooks.
- Textbooks are covered by the Learner Development Levy.
- Photocopying and art/craft supplies
- All toiletries
- Sports equipment
Daily Essentials
What should my child bring to school?
- Suitable bag with child’s name (no wheelie bags)
- Change of clothes in bag
- Bottle of sun cream (kept at school)
- Water bottle with name
- Zip-up reading bag for books
- Healthy lunch in labeled lunchbox
- Morning snack (Preschool and Grade 0 only)
What food is allowed?
Please provide healthy lunches and snacks. No sweets, chips, chocolates, or junk food are allowed. Ensure your child has eaten a healthy breakfast before school.
Can my child bring toys?
No, please don’t send toys to school as they disrupt the class and may get damaged. We provide all play materials.
What is the uniform policy?
The OTB uniform is compulsory and available through the school. Boys and girls wear identical uniforms:
- OTB T-shirt (order through school)
- OTB fleece (order through school)
- OTB hat (order through school)
- Navy/black/grey shorts for summer OR navy/black/grey tracksuit pants for winter (source yourself)
- Black takkies and white socks (winter) OR black/blue/grey sandals/flip flops (summer) – barefoot is best!
Are there grooming standards?
- Hair must be tied up and neat (boys and girls)
- No shaved designs or hair dye
- Only studs or sleeper earrings allowed
- No nail polish
How much homework can I expect?
- Foundation Phase: Basic weekly homework in English, Afrikaans, and Math, with occasional projects
- Intermediate Phase: Predominantly project-based, with daily reading and number concepts (number bonds, times tables)
Is daily reading required?
Yes! Grades 0-3 receive a daily reader with a reading record to sign. Grades 4-7 are also encouraged to read daily. This should be an interactive, enjoyable time—discuss pictures, predict stories, and build a love of reading together.
What is Show and Tell?
Preschool through Grade 3 participate every Friday. Children bring something of interest (NOT toys)—a shell, photo, plant, book, etc. This builds confidence, memory, language skills, and presentation abilities.
How does the library system work?
Children visit the library every Friday to choose a book for the week. Books must be returned the following Friday to receive a new one. Damaged, broken, or lost books must be replaced at your own cost with a similar book.
How often will I receive progress reports?
- Preschool – Grade 00: Two progress reports (Term 2 and Term 4)
- Grade 0-7: Four reports (one per term)
When are parent-teacher meetings held?
Two parent-teacher talks are scheduled during Terms 1 and 3.
How does the school communicate with parents?
Primarily via email. We also have WhatsApp groups per class and a larger one, which all parents will be added to. We also have a regular newsletter. Please ensure we have your current email address and confirm it’s an effective communication method for you.
What security measures are in place?
- Linked to SDS Security
- Panic buttons throughout the school
- Located 100m from boomed access point
- Full-time security personnel (Felix) for security, traffic flow, and maintenance
- Security cameras installed
- All teachers are first aid and CPR trained
What about medical emergencies?
All teachers are trained in first aid and CPR. We require emergency contact information and permission to seek medical treatment if parents cannot be reached immediately.
